The life of Mrs. Frank Hazlett, an old resident of Cherokee county, was suddenly terminated yesterday. At a crossing a mile or so this side of Washta the south bound passenger train crashed into the buggy in which she was riding and killer her instantly. She was somewhat blind and quite deaf and probably did not see or hear the train approaching. The accident occurred where there is a curve in the track and a down grade. Engineer Greig and Fireman Lindsey were on the engine. The fireman was the first to see the vehicle and at once realized that there must be a close shave. He shouted to Engineer Greig, who gave four shrill whistles and put on brakes. The buggy top was up and they could not see the occupant. The horse threw up his head and it looked as if he would stop, but he moved over the crossing. The engine crashed into the buggy, completely demolishing it. Its only occupant, Mrs. Hazlett, was found about 150 feet below the crossing. Dr. Biller was on the train, and as soon as he could reach her, he pronounced her dead. A gash in her head showed that death had been instantaneous. The bruises the cow catcher received shows that the crash was a terrific one.
