Gaylord H. Lubeck, 70, of Cherokee, died Friday, March 15, 2002 in the Hospice of the Valley in Glendale, Ariz., following a brief illness. Services will be held Friday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Cherokee. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee.

He was born March 17, 1931 in Stanford, Neb. To Henry and Ida Lubeck. He attended schools in Nebraska and graduated valedictorian from Mascot School of Nebraska, near Atlantic, Neb. In 1948. Gaylord then entered the United States Air Force, serving in England and in Omaha during the Korean War. On May 6, 1951, he married Velma Halderman in Holdrege, Neb. They moved to Cherokee in 1956 and started Lubeck Oil Co. In 1972 he built the Turbo Tunnel and in 1975 he established Cherokee Harley Davidson. Gaylord was a member of the Little Sioux Wildlife Assoc., Harley Owner’s Group, Cherokee Flying Club. National Rifle Assoc. and the Petroleum Marketers of Iowa. He was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as a pilot for many years. He enjoyed motorcycling and RV’ing.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, serving as an elder and on several church committees.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara Mangan, and her husband, Joseph; Patricia Melton, and her husband, Kevin; two sons, Dennis Lubeck, and is wife, Beth; Mike Lubeck and his fiancée, Cara Scott, all of Cherokee; 10 grandchildren, Daniel Mangan, and his fiancé, Susan Morgan of Montgomery, Ala.; Robert Mangan of Sioux City; Timothy Mangan, and his fiancée, Katie Schueder of Des Moines; Thomas Mangan, Daniel rector, Amber Melton, Nicole Melton, Kinyon Melton, Maggie Lubeck and Abby Lubeck, all of Cherokee.

One brother, Darrell Lubeck, and his wife, Ann of Sac City; two sisters, Shirley Posey, and her husband; Robert of Bossier City, La.; Darlene Harris, and her husband, Pete of Bay City, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Esther Lubeck; one sister, Irene Morse, three brothers, Kenneth, Wesley and Arvin Lubeck.
