Vere B. Chapman, 87, long-time Meriden area resident, died Tuesday, July 10, 1999, in the Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 23 from the Boothby Funeral Home, Cherokee. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden.
He was born Oct. 27, 1911, in Perkins County, S.D., to A. C. and Nellie Warren Chapman. He attended rural schools near Currie, Minn. He was married to Elsie B. Mosier on Oct 8, 1932, at Dakota City, Neb. He was a life-long farmer in Cherokee County, retiring in 1975. He had resided in the Meriden area most of his life and in the Heartland Care Center, Marcus, for the past 1 ½ years. He was affiliated with the Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie; and five children, Barbara and her husband, Adrian Welch, Syracuse, Neb.; Dolores and her husband, George Yaros, Lakewood, NJ.; Dan Chapman and his wife, Linda, Meriden; Jim Chapman and his wife, Eta, Albia; and Linda and her husband Rod Widicker, Bowdon, N.D.; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lucile Chapman, Cherokee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clare, Sherman and Harry; four sisters, Rowena Anderson, Gertrude Bruns, Doris Lindstrom and Nellie Henderson; and two brothers in infancy.
