M. E. Hinkley, one of the earliest pioneers of Amherst Township and one of the best known of the early settlers of Cherokee county, passed away at his home at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Friday at the age of 84.

Born at Troy, N. Y., Mr. Hinkley came to Iowa and settled near Marcus in 1869, where he established one of the first nurseries in Cherokee county and was later elected head of the Iowa Horticultural society.

He established a horticultural monthly, The Fruitman, in 1898, which he published and edited for ten years and continued to edit for a longer period. He was later editor of the Iowa Homestead in Des Moines and contributor to other magazines and newspapers.

Mr. Hinkley was familiar with the early history of Cherokee county and at various times had written for The Times a number of most interesting articles dealing with early day events and people.

He was an omnivorous reader, a devoted church worker and wrote much fiction and verse for his own satisfaction. He moved to Mount Vernon in 1899 and with the exception of two years spent at Waukon had lived here ever since.

Surviving are four children, Laura and Mrs. Blanche Howe of Mount Vernon, Mary of Chicago and Verne, a newspaper man in Honolulu, Hawaii. His wife died six years ago. Funeral services will be held at Mt. Vernon today.
