BROTHERS DIE A DAY APART

Separate funeral services will be Wednesday for two Cherokee brothers who died within a day of each other.

Frank (Dick) Witcombe, 80, died Sunday morning at his home at 1003 Ridgeview Drive, Cherokee, following a brief illness. He had lived in Cherokee the past 50 years and prior to that had lived in Washta.

John S. Witcombe, 76, died Monday morning in Country Side Estates, Cherokee, following a year long illness. He had lived in Cherokee most of his life.

Services for Dick Witcombe will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Church of Christ with Mr. Donald Hensley officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery under direction of the Boothby Funeral Home. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 at the church.

He was born Oct 27, 1903, at Cardiff, Wales. On June 10, 1924, he married Hazel Sargent at Boone. He had worked for the Cherokee Fire Department and the Iowa Public Service in Cherokee for many years.

Mr. Witcombe was a member of the First Church of Christ, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and was active in area senior citizens' groups.

Survivors include one son, Wayne Witcombe, Cherokee; two daughters, Mrs. Encil (Lois) Williams, Torrington, Wyo.; and Betty Hein, Spencer; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert (Bud) Witcombe, Norwalk, Cal. and three sisters, Mrs. Evan (Ruth) Booth and Mrs. Dale (Margaret) Nation, both of Cherokee and Mrs. Victor (Norma) Nemec, Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife on June 12, 1969; one son Paul, April 7, 1967 and one sister.

Services for John S. Witcombe will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Davis Officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery under direction of the Boothby Funeral Home. There will be a family prayer service at 9:45 at the church.

John Witcombe was born Nov. 6, 1907, at Cardiff, Wales. On June 8, 1933, he married Ethel Lint in Cherokee, He worked for Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. and the Cherokee Parks and Recreation Department, retiring October 1982.

Mr. Witcombe was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the I.O.O.F.Lodge, Cherokee.

Survivors include three sons, Howard Witcombe, Aurelia; and Donald and Ronald Witcombe, both of Cherokee; seven grandchildren; one brother, Albert (Bud) Witcombe, Norwalk, Cal. and three sisters, Mrs. Evan (Ruth) Booth and Mrs. Dale (Margaret) Nation, both of Cherokee and Mrs. Victor (Norma) Nemec, Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife on April 12, 1983 and one sister.
