Mrs. Maria J. Schlinger, wife of Geo. Schlinger, of this city, died at her home at 3:00 o'clock Sunday morning 5 July 1896). She had complained for a few days previous to her death, of a cold on the lungs, and Sunday morning at about 2:30 she arose to heat some milk with which to relieve a feeling of tightness in her chest. The drink brought on a feeling of nausea and in the effort to relieve her stomach, she fell back upon the bed and expired suddenly.
Mrs. Schlinger was 81 years old June 28. She came to Cherokee with her husband, in 1893, from Milwaukee, where she had lived for forty-two years. She leaves a family of five daughters and three sons, beside her aged husband, as follows: Lizzie Schlinger, an invalid daughter, who resides with her parents; Mrs. Josie Kuhn, Cleghorn; Mrs. Henry Roddis, Osakis, Minn.: Mrs. Christina Newell, Newton, Kan.; Mrs. Kate Young, Burlington, Iowa; M. Schlinger, Cleghorn; Geo. Schlinger, Adamsville, Ala.; Balthaser Schlinger, North Greenfield, Wis. She was a woman of remarkable ambition and vitality. Notwithstanding her extreme age, up to the time of her death she managed alone her household work, including the care of her invalid daughter, and but a few days before had done the family washing.
She was an earnest member of the Catholic Church, where the funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 9:00 o'clock, Rev. Father Sannders officiating. Peace to her ashes.
