Cherokee County History Book,

David Scott, a successful farmer of Afton Township, was a resident of Cherokee County for forty-four years. He was born near Dunville, Ontario on April 7, 1834. He lived in his native land until he was twenty-two years old, following boating as a business.

In 1856 he moved to Winneshiek County, Iowa and settled near Frankville. For six years he engaged in farming before coming to Cherokee County where he purchased eighty-six acres as a homestead. He built a good dwelling , commodious barns and sheds, and planted a fine grove of trees. During his redidence in Cherokee County Mr. Scott devoted himself to raising grain and livestock with uniform success.

David was the son of Samuel and Ann (Tate)Scott, of Irish birth. On January 28, 1865 he married Mary Ackerson, a native of New York State. She was the daughter of Cornelius and Eliza ( Furdman), of Dutch origin. David and Mary had ten children: John Henry, George Albert, James Jefferson, Winfield, Anna Eliza, Emma Ida, Eugene, David, Clara, and Sara.

While residing in Cherokee County Mr. Scott held several offices of trust and responsibility which he performed to the satisfaction of the public.He gave his children a good common-school education and was a liberal supporter of all efforts to advance the standing of the community.

On the day of McKinley's assassination he was sticken with paralysis, from which he suffered up till the time of his death. He departed this life April 26 1906, at 6 P.M. at the age of 71 years. The family have lost a kind husband and father and the community a warm hearted friend.

The funeral was conducted from the residence in Cherokee, Sunday at 2;00 p.m. Rev. J. M. Hupp officiating; the choir from the M. E. Church were in attendance. A large fureral procession followed the remains to the Cannon Cemetery in Afton Township, where all that was mortal of David Scott was consigned to the Mother Earth. At the cemetery the casket was opened that the large company of old friends and neighbors in waiting might look upon the face of the one they loved for the last time.

The family have the sympathy of the entire community.
