From the Cherokean Democrat October 21, 1891

It is our sorrowful duty this week to record the death, from diphtheria, of Robert Maxwell Herrick, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Herrick, which occurred on Friday morning last. “Max” as was all knew him, contracted the terrible disease in its mot pronounced form, but until a day or so previous to his death there was ground for belief that he might recover. But the hour came when medical skill and hopes and prayers were of no avail, and the flower of another household faded to bloom again. Max was 8 years and 6 days old. He was a bright, manly little fellow, and his death recalls the thought that earth’s choicest flowers are soonest faded. The funeral occurred on Friday afternoon at 3:30 and notwithstanding the nature of the disease a large number of friends gathered about in carriages and followed the remains to Oak Hill. In this time of sore affliction the sympathies of the entire community go out to Mr. and Mrs. Herrick.
