STORM LAKE — Memorial services
were held here Aug. 15 at Storm
Lake for Bernard "Ben" John Abels,
28, of Storm Lake. Burial was Aug. 18
in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee, with
the Sliefert Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements. Mr. Abels died Aug.
12 at Buena Vista County Hospital
after a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 1, 1953, in
Cherokee to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon
Abels. He was baptized at
Immaculate Conception Church in
Cherokee, and in 1964 was confirmed
at St Mary's Church in Storm Lake.
He began his schooling in Cherokee,
later attending St Mary's and Storm
Lake High School, where be
graduated in 1972. He actively participated
in sports, helping to set
records in track.
On Sept. 20,1975, he married Debbie
Christenson at Alta. He was employed
by Hy-Grade Food Products and other
jobs in the Storm Lake area.
In July 1978, they moved to Forest
Grove, Ore., where he was employed
by Cennex Full Circle Implement
until he became disabled by Hodgkins
Disease. They returned to Storm Lake
in. July 1980.
Survivors include his wife; his
parents; brothers, Kurt, Stephen and
Christopher, all of Storm Lake; his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben
Abels, Cherokee, and many other
relatives in the area.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, Damian, in 1959.
