Obituary of Philo Sleezer #2: source unknown.
Philo Sleezer
Another was taken away from Cherokee’s rapidly diminishing list of pioneers Saturday. Philo Sleezer, who is well known to all old settlers of the county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thos. Dewar, about 10 o’clock this morning of the 6th. The 6th was his 79th birthday and the time of his death with within a half hour of the time of his birth, so he lacked but a few minutes of being exactly 79 years old.
Mr. Sleezer was born in Orleans county, New York, in 1824. After marrying he moved west with his family, arriving in Cherokee county in 1872. He settled on a farm, but moved into Cherokee city fifteen years ago. His wife’s death occurred several years ago. Eight children were born to them, of whom seven are now living, they being John, Charles, William and Mrs. Thos. Dewar of Cherokee; Mrs. Francis Biddle of Kansas; Mrs. W. Fairweather of Illinois and another daughter, Jennie Sleezer, of Dakota. His death is simply the result of his advanced age. He was a man generally respected and liked. The funeral services were held yesterday at 11 o’clock serving being conducted by Rev. Weston.
NOTE: the birthdate of 1824 is correct in this obituary.
