Samuel H. Burke of Quimby Dies Friday, Aged 74- Funeral Monday AfternoonSamuel H. Burke was born May 13, 1843, in Luzerne Co,Pa. and died at his home in Quimby, Iowa, Nov. 9,1917.
He was a Civil War Veteran, having volunteered in 1861, joining the 58th Pa. Infantry. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant & had been recommended for lieutenant, when his company was mustered out Jan. 24,1868. The regiment, of which Mr. Burke was a member was with General Grant at Cold Harbor, & this regiment also bore a conspicuous part in the campaign which resulted in the capture of Lee's Army.
On Oct. 9, 1867, he was married to Emma Bennett. Mr. & Mrs. Burke celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last month.
In 1869 Mr. & Mrs. Burke came to Iowa, settling in Lucas Co, moving to Cherokee Co. in 1883, where they have resided, with the exception of 2 years spent in Canada.
Mr. Burke is survived by his wife & 6 children. They are Edward E. of Chillocothe, Missouri, Mrs. M.B. Smith of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. T.L. Pelton of Cherokee; William J. of Truax, Canada; Charles A. of Moose Jaw, Canada, & G. Franklin, now serving with the 41st Canadian Battalion in France. All except the latter are expected for the funeral, which will be held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o' clock.
