CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Mabel Marie Smith, 92, of Le Mars, Iowa, and former Cherokee resident, passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 22, 2004, at her residence in the Abbey at Le Mars.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with Elder Robert Smith and Elder Julie Wright officiating. Burial will be in Cherokee Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mabel was born June 9, 1912, at Little Sioux City, Iowa to Leander and Laura (Madison) White. She was the oldest daughter of 11 children.
She was united in marriage to Harold V. Smith on Aug. 29, 1935, at Sioux City. Mabel and Viv lived in Cherokee until 1957, when they moved to Le Mars. In 1968, they moved to Ida Grove until Viv's death on Feb. 6, 1971, at which time Mabel moved back to Cherokee. She worked at Cherokee Draperies for a number of years before she retired. She moved to Le Mars in 1994 and resided with her son and daughter-in-law for four years before moving to Park Place Estates. She then moved to the Abbey in March of 2001, where she had resided since.
Mabel cut and permed hair in her home in Cherokee and Le Mars for many years. She also taught adult education knitting classes in Le Mars and continued to enjoy knitting and crocheting many items until her death. She donated knitted baby sweaters to the Floyd Valley Hospital Gift Shop in Le Mars the last several years. She enjoyed visiting with her family and friends and tending to her houseplants. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Cherokee.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Dennis and Linda Smith of Le Mars; a son-in-law, Donald Wright of Cherokee; three grandchildren, Michael Wright and his wife, Julie, of Jackson, Miss., Kim Spier and her husband, Russ, of Hartley, Iowa and Tait Smith of Canoga Park, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Jessica, Mallory and Elizabeth Spier; two sisters, Opal Reed of Pleasant Hill, Mo. and Ruth Hausmann of Cherokee; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Donna Wright, on Oct. 21, 1994; seven brothers; and a sister.
