W. M. Coombs Pass[ed] Away Last Week.
This community was greatly shocked on the evening of July Fourth of the departure of one of our oldest and most prominent citizens, who like he had served his country even on the field of
battle. On that day he seemed to feel unusually well and enjoyed the visits of the family and the exercises of the occasion. Toward evening he drew a chair to the lawn to enjoy the coolness
of the evening hours and while talking to his wife passed away to answer the eternal roll call. For some time his health had been frail, but of late he seemed to regain much of his lost
health and vigor so that his sudden departure came as a shock and a surprise.Wm. Milton Coombs was born in Putnam county, Indiana, Nov. 26, 1841, and when he was twelve years old the family moved to Champaign county, Illinois and four years after they came
to Greene county, Iowa. Mr. Coombs grew up to the life of a farmer, but when the war alarm sounded he obeyed the summons enlisting in Co. H under Captain Orr in Carroll county in June 1861.3 unreadable lines
Corinth and the fight at Champion Hill at which place he was severely wounded. After the war he returned to Greene county and lived there until the spring of 1870 when he came to Cherokee county where he made his home until the time of his death. Mr. Coombs was married January 22, 1865 to Miss Matilda McKinney who survives him. They had a family of nine children two of whom Ida and Alice are dead. Etta, Libbie, Effie, Millie and Pearl with two sons Zoma and Charles are left to mourn his loss.
The funeral services were held in the Congregational church of which he has for many years been a leading official and a faithful member, Sunday at 3:00 p. m. The services were in charge of the G. A. R. and M. W. A. and the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Robert Hoffman. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Interment was made in the Pleasant Hill
cemetery.
