OBITUARY
Mary Jane Bates was born July 18, 1837 at Penn Line, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and died at Cathway, North Dakota, January 22, 1913 at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 4 days.
Her girlhood days were spent at the place of birth and on January 1, 1856, she was married to Hiram Lord. To this union six children were born, three of whom have preceded her in death, also the husband who died April 10, 1902. The three remaining children to mourn her death are William Lord of Paige, Nebraska; Elton Lord, of Clinton, Iowa; and Mrs. M. Shea, of Cathway, North Dakota. She was of a family of nine children of three three brothers and two sisters survive her.
Together with her husband she moved to Iowa in 1869 and settled in Jasper county. In 1870 they moved to Cherokee county and settled on a farm near Aurelia where they lived until 1896 when they moved to town, at which place she lived until 1904 when she went to live with her daughter Cathay, North Dakota, where she resided the greater part of the time until her death.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Aurelia Sunday afternoon and the remains laid to rest in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Besides her children, out of town relatives attending the service were a grandson, Fred Lord of Clinton, her brother, David Bates of Madison, South Dakota and a niece, Mrs. Hattie McCrum who lives west of Cherokee.
