SOPHIE M. DUCOMMUN
(March 5, 1916 - March 24, 2009)

SOPHIE M. DUCOMMUN, 93, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Tuesday evening, March 24, 2009 at The Gardens in Cherokee following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 28th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Jud Stover will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedar Cemetery at Larrabee, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials be made to Cherokee Regional Hospice or Larrabee United Methodist Church. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Sophie was born March 5, 1916 at Larrabee, Iowa to Fred C. and Mary (Roskammer) Steimke. She graduated from Larrabee High School in 1934 and attended National Business Training School in Sioux City for one year. She was married to Alvin H. Ducommun on January 30, 1938 at Larrabee, Iowa. The couple lived on farms in Cherokee County before moving to the Larrabee Farm in 1941. They farmed until retiring in 1978 when they moved to Cherokee. She was a member of the Larrabee United Methodist Church, the Larrabee U.M.W. and Circle and the Pleasant Hour Club. Sophie enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family, going to basketball games, on bus tours with Alvin and loved spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alvin on December 7, 2005, two brothers Clarence Steimke and Henry Steimke in infancy and one sister Lillian Swanson.

She is survived by one daughter and one son: Vicky Gries and her husband Gerry of Plymouth, Minnesota; Jim Ducommun and his wife Judy of Larrabee, Iowa; 6 grandchildren: Kurt Gries and his fiancé Kristen Stensberg of Jackson, Wyoming; Kevin Gries and his wife Stacy of Alpine, Wyoming; Jeff Ducommun and his wife Linda of Larrabee, Iowa; Jason Ducommun and his wife Carey of Larrabee, Iowa; Jared Ducommun and his wife Kim of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Kari Nelson and her husband Dan of Maple Grove, Minnesota; 10 great grandchildren: Tina Guedes; Jaden, Drew and Adrie Ducommun; Danyel Jo and Drew Nelson; Samantha and Jeremy Alvin Gries; Kenly Ducommun; Kyler Ducommun; a sister-in-law Nolie Stieneke and her husband Ronald of Sioux City, Iowa; many special nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
