Norma Darlene (Woods) Wampler, 75, of Cherokee, died on March 8, 2009 in Covenant Hospital, Waterloo, following a brief illness.

As per her wishes, her body was cremated, and burial will be in Missouri at a later date. Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee is in charge of arrangements. On-line condolences may be sent to greenwoodfuneral.com.

Norma was born Dec. 8, 1933 in Alanthus, Mo., to William C. and Ada (Ginrich) Woods. She graduated from Stanberry High School in Stanberry, Mo. in 1951, and attended Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, Mo. for one year. Norma then moved to Arlington, Va. where she worked as a civil service employee for the U.S. Navy from 1952-1958. She then moved to Ravenwood, Mo. where she lived from 1958-1960.

On Oct. 10, 1954, she married Marvin Wampler in Stanberry, Mo.

Following their move to Cherokee in 1960, Norma worked for J.C. Penney's and later at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute for 33 years, working as a nurse's aide supervisor before retiring in July of 1996.

Norma loved to garden, play cards, do needlework, read, and go to the movies. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband, visiting all but three states, and taking many cruises.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Mary Ann; three brothers, Eugene, Leland and Merril Woods; and a sister, Marjorie Thirsten.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Mona Wilson and her husband, Robert, of Jewell and Lavetta Wampler, of Dysart; two sons, Vaughn Wampler of Homer, Neb. and LaVerne Wampler of Billings, Mont.; and 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
