J. Romaine Ryan

J. Romaine Ryan, 91, of Cherokee, Iowa, died Friday February 20, 2009 at Cherokee Regional Medical Center, Cherokee, Iowa following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday February 24, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be Monday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. A prayer service will be held Monday at 7:00 P.M., followed by a rosary with the Knights of Columbus. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com

Romaine was born on November 13, 1917 in Varina, Iowa to William J. and Nell (Carey) Ryan. He attended school in Varina, Iowa at St. Columbkille Parochial School and graduated in 1936. In April of 1941 he entered the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II and was discharged in October of 1945. Following his military service he moved to Fonda, Iowa where he started working in the Petroleum business for 7 years. They lived in California for a brief period of time until Romaine and Joanne moved to Cherokee, Iowa where he worked in the Petroleum business for 39 years, retiring in 1988.

On August 17, 1946 he married Joanne Wright in Storm Lake, Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 10, 1991.

Romaine was involved in many organizations; the Knights of Columbus in which he was the Past Grand Knight, the American Legion, and the V.F.W. He was also a charter member of the following organizations, Lions Club, A.R.C., and the Work Activity Center.

He is survived by a son, Bill Ryan of Plano, TX; a daughter, Mary Pat Peters and her husband, Larry, of Plano, TX; a son Tim Ryan of Plano, TX; grandsons, John Peters and his wife, Katie, of Ladera Ranch, CA; Ryan Peters and his wife, Suzanne, of Norman, OK; a granddaughter, Nicki Elibary and her husband, Wally, of McKinney, TX; two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne (1991); his parents and two brothers.
