WILBUR F. HALEY
U.S. Veteran WILBUR F. HALEY, 89, of St Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Cherokee & Mechanicsville, Iowa, died Friday, January 23, 2009 following a lengthy illness in St. Joseph, Mo.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday January 27th, at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Ethan D. Sayler will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday January 26th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Meriden Cemetery. Survivors include his son Robert (Becky) Haley of St. Joseph, Mo., and his daughter Becky (Steve) Danly of Mechanicsville, Iowa; 3 grandchildren: Lauren Haley, Jennifer Brandt, and Brian Danly; 1 great grandchild Jocelyn Brandt and many nieces and nephews. Memorial to “Hands of Hospice” in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife Elouise, 4 brothers: Vernon, Lewis, Ernest, and Otis; 2 sisters; Gladys and Alice, and 1 grandson Nathan Haley.

He was born in Cherokee, Iowa on September 3, 1919, the son of Fred & Pearl (Bartley) Haley. He served in the U.S. Nay during World War II and was at Pearl Harbor during the attack. Upon returning home Wilbur met and married Elouise Lamont on December 17, 1944. Together they ran Haley’s Grocery Store in Meriden, Iowa. In 1960 they relocated to Mechanicsville, where he spent most of his career working for the U.S. Postal Service before retiring on January 2, 1985.

Wilbur enjoyed jazz immensely and was an accomplished singer, guitar player, and piano player. He was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, Pearl Harbors Survivor Association, V.F.W., American Legion, D.A.V., and N.A.R.F.E.
