Dr. Kenneth B. Hoyt passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at the Deerfield Health Center in Urbandale.

Born on July 13, 1924, Dr. Hoyt was recognized as a worldwide leader in the field of career education. He was the author of numerous articles and books and was a public speaker, both at the national and international level. Dr. Hoyt dedicated his career to the belief that our educational system should prepare our youth not only for a post-secondary education, but for a productive and challenging career.

Dr. Hoyt received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, his Master's degree from George Washington University, and his PhD from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Hoyt was a professor of educational psychology at the University of Iowa and the University of Maryland. He also served as the Director of the Office of Career Education for the United States Government.

Dr. Hoyt ended his career at Kansas State University where he received an endowed chair in the Department of Education. While at Kansas State University, Dr. Hoyt secured what at the time was the largest grant ever received by Kansas State's Department of Education.

Dr. Hoyt was a member of numerous professional associations and served as the President of the American Personnel and Guidance Association. Dr. Hoyt was also the developer of the Specialty Oriented Student (SOS) program, widely recognized as the world's premier academic tool for high school graduates who seek an alternative to a four year post-secondary education.

Dr. Hoyt was preceded in death by his parents, Paul & Helen Hoyt, his sister,Marjorie Jones, and his brother, Dr. Donald Hoyt. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Hoyt, his children, Andrew Hoyt, Roger Hoyt, and Elinore Sabourin, his grandchildren, Tracy Hoyt, Andrea Hoyt George, Michael Hoyt, Nathan Hoyt, Zachary Hoyt, Lara Sabourin, Benjamin Sabourin and four great grandchildren.

A private memorial will be held for the immediate family at the chapel in St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee is handling the arrangements.
