(September 4, 1923 - August 23, 2008)

BURL F. GREEN, 84, of Cherokee, Iowa and former long time rural Cleghorn area resident passed away Saturday evening, August 23, 2008 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 27th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Memorial Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Ethan Sayler and Rev. Andrew Hilla will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, Iowa. There will be flag presentation at the cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa with the family present in the evening from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday morning at the church with the family present from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. On line condolences may be sent to www.boothbyfuneral.com.

Burl was born on September 4, 1923 at Quimby, Iowa to Clare W. and Helen (Moe) Green. He graduated from Quimby Public Schools in 1941. He was veteran of WW II serving in the 13th Air Force from 1943 until 1946 when he was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was married to Colene Rowland on August 11, 1946 at Mound City, Missouri. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1967 from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. He then received a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology and Guidance in 1968 from the University of South Dakota. The couple lived and farmed north of Cleghorn from 1947 until 2007 when they moved to Cherokee. He was a guidance counselor for the Aurelia High School from 1968 until 1976, was a social worker in Cherokee County, was director of Social Services in Plymouth and Buena Vista County and had been a Juvenile Court Officer for Cherokee, O’Brien and Plymouth counties. Burl was active in the Democratic Party, a member of the Cherokee County Conservation Board for 12 years and a member of the Northwest Iowa Personnel and Guidance Association. He was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church and former long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina. Burl followed the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Dennis Green, a grandson Eric Green, two brothers and sisters-law Vernon & Esther Green, Melvin & Margaret Green; a sister and brother-in-law Vesta & Noel Courtright; two brothers-in-law Roy Nelson and Edgar Roseen.

He is survived by his wife Colene; 2 sons and 3 daughters: Terry Green and his wife Jean of Guttenberg, Iowa; Morey Green and his wife Clarice of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Sue Stuhr and her husband Bob of Ocean Isle, North Carolina; Annette Raver and her husband Jeff of Eureka, Illinois; Linda Green of Cherokee, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 1 brother and 2 sisters: Dale Green and his wife Dorothy of Estherville, Iowa; Doris Roseen of Marcus, Iowa; Beverly Nelson of Cherokee, Iowa; also many nieces and nephews.
