George Steig, 91 of Iowa City, formerly of Cherokee, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008.

George was born Jan. 22, 1917, in Storm Lake, the son of George F. and Ina Mae (Gilmore) Steig. He married Genevieve Bainbridge Woltman on July 2, 1938, and lived happily as her devoted husband until her death on April 17, 2008. They had two sons, Cary Allen and Billy Kay.

During World War II, George and Genevieve lived on the West Coast, but they spent most of their lives in Cherokee, until moving to Iowa City in 2003. George was a master cabinetmaker working for Grundman-Hicks in Cherokee for most of his life.

His family includes his son, Bill Steig (Alyce) of Iowa City; grandchildren, Amy Steig of Denver, Colo., Aja Bouska (Martin) and Ashley Steig of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Steig of Plano, Texas; grandson, Tal Steig (Anita) and great-grandchildren, Seth, Caleb, Simone, Kenya and Elijah Steig all of Sutherland; sister-in-law, Joyce Pyle (Virgil) of Cherokee, and brother-in-law, Gary Woltman of Arnolds Park.

George was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Genevieve; son, Cary; and grandson, Jeff Steig.

No services are planned. Cremation services were provided through Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Online condolences may be sent for the family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com.
