Robert Heistand

Robert Heistand, 76, of Cherokee, Iowa, died Tuesday June 24, 2008 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Friday June 27, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Gregg Johnson will officiate. Burial will be on Saturday at 2:30 P.M. in the Oak Hill Cemetery Cherokee, Iowa. Military Honors will be provided by the V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com.

Robert was born on August 10, 1931 in Pisgah, Iowa to Guy and Hazel (Thorson) Heistand. He attended school in Dunlap, Iowa, graduating in 1949. Following high school he entered the United States Air Force and worked as a mechanic. On December 1, 1955 he married Mattie Dean in La Grange, Georgia. Robert then worked for Wilson Foods in Omaha, Nebraska for 20 years. He liked to do auto body repair on the side while working in Council Bluffs. In 1976 he transferred to Wilson Foods in Cherokee, Iowa where he retired in 1995. After his retirement he liked to make wishing wells and flower pots. Robert enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Mattie; three daughters, Julie Rudisill and her husband, Trapper, of Cherokee, Iowa; Linda Waugh and her husband, John, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Christine Kirsch and her husband, Charles, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two sons, David Gerber and his wife, Vivian, of Stoughton, Wisconsin; Tim Heistand and his partner, Brad Butterworth, of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters, Helen Craft of Logan, Iowa and Delores Schrom of Enon, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-granchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Robert Eugene (1960); a grandson Donny Wood; two brothers, Leo and Gerald; two sisters, Marva and Leanna.
