Clark V. Skaggs, 81, of Cherokee, former longtime rural Cleghorn, Iowa, resident, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at his home, following a two-month battle with cancer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with Pastor Don Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Clark was born on Aug. 20, 1926, in Cherokee County, Iowa, to Will and Fanny (Prunty) Skaggs. He graduated from Cleghorn High School in 1944. He then attended Buena Vista College. He was married to Veniece Miller on May 29, 1947, at Sioux Falls, S.D. He was later married to Ardyce (Latuska) Barritt on Oct. 7, 1977, at Marcus, Iowa. Clark drove school bus for Cleghorn for one year and then started farming north of Cleghorn in 1948. He founded CVS Feed & Fertilizer, which he operated from the 1960s until 1997.
He was a member of the Paullina and Cherokee Flying Clubs. He loved to travel, traveling to Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Spain, the Holy Land and Romania (15 times). He enjoyed camping with his family, mechanical work on tractors and cars, flying his various planes, playing the trumpet and whistling. He had been a resident of Cherokee since 2004, and prior to this on a farm north of Cleghorn.
He is survived by his wife, Ardyce; four children, Diana (Jim) Johnson of St. John, Kan., Mary Jo (Don) Riepe of Guthrie, Okla., Lisa (Brian) Caldwell of Mapleton, Minn., and Andy Skaggs and his fiancee, Shelby Lloyd of Cleghorn; three stepchildren, Bill (Jill) Barritt of Cleghorn, Carrie (Mike) Smeltzer of Cleghorn, and Jay (Aimee) Barritt of Cherokee; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Skaggs Prell and her husband, Larry of Larrabee, Iowa; five stepgrandchildren; and a brother, LeRoy Skaggs of Anchorage, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis Skaggs; and an infant brother, Royal Skaggs.
