LaVonne M. Reed, 86, of Norfolk, Neb., former longtime Cherokee resident, passed away Friday, April 25, 2008, at Edgewood Vista in Norfolk.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Church of Christ in Cherokee, with Pastors Tom Lewis and Gregg Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

LaVonne was born Nov. 19, 1921, at Perry, Iowa, to Walter and Bertha (Snyder) Lindley. She was raised on a farm in Webb, Iowa (Clay County), where she learned to love nature. She attended schools at Webb, and graduated from Garfield High School in 1939.

She was married to Darrell Reed on Dec. 20, 1943, at Sioux Falls, S.D. She began writing poetry at an early age and continued almost until death. In 1993, she began writing a weekly column, "Grin and Share It" for the Cherokee Chronicle. In 1996, her writings were combined into a published work call "Brain Children from the Heart." As an amateur musician, LaVonne shared her talents at nursing homes all over Northwest Iowa as she played the old songs and hymns in programs she called "Remembering with Reed." Once her own children were grown, she truly enjoyed being grandma to her own family as well as just about every child in Cherokee. As wife, mother, grandmother, musician, poet, entertainer, Hawkeye fan and just LaVonne, she did everything with love. She will truly be truly missed.

The couple had lived in Cherokee since 1945, moving to Norfolk two and a half years ago to be closer to their family. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cherokee, where she taught Sunday school and was an arts and crafts teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell, now of Norfolk; her daughter, Sherrill Glandt and her husband, Larry of Norfolk; her son, Shannon Reed and his wife, Lou Ann of Calabasas, Calif.; two grandchildren, Teena Andersen and her husband, Rod of Pilger, Neb., and Darren Glandt and his wife, Lisa of Omaha; and two great-grandchildren, Hayley and Alyssa Andersen of Pilger.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
