Darren Ruby, 68, of Cherokee, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at the Countryside Estates in Cherokee, following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services were held April 19 at the First Baptist Church in Cherokee. Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee was in charge of arrangements.
Darren was born on May 24, 1939 in Alta, to Kenneth and Gen (Pullman) Ruby. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1957.
Following his education, he moved to Wyoming and worked a short while before entering the United States Army. In June of 1975 he married Jeanne Peterson in Kirtland, New Mexico. They spent most of their life in California, where Darren worked as a truck driver and also as a millwright. After his retirement, Jeanne and Darren traveled the country visiting many states in their camper. They have made their home in Cherokee for the past two years, to be close to family and friends. Darren was a former member of the Elks Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; children, Dale Ruby Fox and his wife, Ann, of Bend, Ore.; Kevin Ruby Fox of Idaho; Leanne Payne and her husband, John, of Florence, Ore.; Mark Klumph of Cherokee; Pete Peterson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; David Peterson of Sioux City; Bob Peterson and his wife, Kathy, of Cherokee; Johnny Peterson and his wife, Karen, of Cherokee; Kim Hardin of Cherokee; 15 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a brother, Larry Ruby and his wife, Dee, of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Sharon Janning and her husband, David, of Storm Lake.
