Joy Wieland Sweet, 73, of Cherokee, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2008 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a several month illness.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Pastor Richard Arndt officiated. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee.
Joy was born April 14, 1934 in Cherokee, to Frank and Marguerite (Wadsley) Wetrosky. She graduated from Wilson High School in the Class of 1952. She received her nurse's training at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City. She was married to Keith Wieland on June 6, 1956 in Cherokee. Keith passed away on Nov. 18, 1988. She was married to Daniel Sweet on April 14, 1990 in Cherokee. Joy had been a resident of Cherokee practically all her life except for three years in Texas and three years in Sioux City. She had worked as Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital for 35 years as a nurse and was Director of Nursing for many years, retiring in 1992. She loved reading, antiques, and time spent with her grandchildren. She spent much of her time showing and breeding Yorkies and Maltese dogs.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Keith.
She is survived by her husband Daniel and one daughter Sandra Renee (Wieland) Stephenson and her friend Lezlie Samuelson of Cherokee; three grandchildren: Mark, Eric and Kayla Stephenson all of Cherokee; two step-daughters: Brenda Tufly and her husband Terry of Rockford, Ill.; Jodi Lytle and her husband Tom of Aurelia; six step-grandchildren.
