Evelyn L. Mattoon, 86, of Cherokee passed away Friday, March 7, 2008, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with Bob Blair officiating. Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery at Alta, Iowa. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Evelyn Leona Wilson was born in Alta on July 6, 1921, to Actor and Gunhild (Storm) Wilson. She attended grade school in Archer and graduated from Peterson High School in 1938.

She moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in the early 1940s. It was there that she met her future husband, Paul Franklin Mattoon, who was originally from Washta, Iowa. After several years of dating, Evelyn and Paul were married on June 27, 1953, in Los Angeles. She and Paul had two children, Sandra and Lloyd. Paul passed away Oct. 3, 1983. Evelyn moved back to Iowa in 1988.

Evelyn and Paul enjoyed going to their favorite restaurant, Nickodell's in Hollywood every Sunday night. They went there for so many years that the owner and all the staff knew them by name. Sandy and Lloyd, as children, spent many hours crawling around under the tables. Sandy and Lloyd even went there with their spouses after they were married.

Evelyn enjoyed cooking and took gourmet cooking classes. She liked trying her gourmet meals out on her family, sometimes to their dismay. A particular dish the kids still discuss was the time their mom raised her own snails for the escargot meal she tried to serve them. Many people envied Evelyn because she had a knack for putting a meal on the table with perfect timing.

She was active in the Ebell Club of Los Angeles. She was very talented in beading and specialized in making floral arrangements. She occasionally taught classes at the Ebell on how to make beautiful bead flowers. Evelyn also enjoyed reading, especially Danielle Steele novels. She also liked to watch the Larry King show.

She is survived by her two children, Sandra Mattoon Guthridge and her husband, Russ of rural Aurelia, Iowa, and Lloyd Wilson Mattoon and his wife, Janice (Blair) of rural Pierson, Iowa; three grandchildren, Stacey (Guthridge) Schweir and her husband, Tim of Omaha, Heather Guthridge of Omaha, and Ryan Guthridge of Grand Forks, N.D.; a stepson, Frank Mattoon and his wife, Roberta of Glendale, Calif., their three children and grandchildren; a sister, Janette Sanders; a niece, Janice McGee and her husband, Vince of Peterson, Iowa; and loving friends, Doris Downs, Linda Klingbeil, Rebecca Mosbach and Carol Peterson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Lloyd D. Wilson; and two stepsons, Paul Franklin Mattoon, Jr. and George Douglas Mattoon.
