Carl Arnold "Arnie" Berglund, 86, of rural Marcus passed away Friday, March 7, 2008, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, Iowa, with the Revs. Duane Queen and Ethan Sayler officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, with military rites conducted by the V.F.W., L.A. Wescott Post 2253. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Arnold was born Jan. 20, 1922 at Cherokee, Iowa, to August and Edith (Ackerlund) Berglund. He rode his horse to country school in Sheridan Township. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the South Pacific during World War II, primarily in New Guinea. He was honorably discharged in February of 1946 with the rank of corporal.

He was married to Evelyn Weinreich on May 21, 1943, in Plymouth County, Iowa. Arnie farmed in Tilden and Grand Meadow Township. He was a longtime Little League coach. He was a 4-H leader of the Grand Meadow Future Feeders for more than 35 years, served on the Marcus Fair Board and received the Iowa State Fair Alumni Award in 1977. He was inducted into the Cherokee County 4-H Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Iowa State 4-H Hall of Fame in 2004 for volunteer service and leadership.

He loved farming and was devoted to his wife and his family. He wanted all his grandchildren to go to college and was very proud of them. He was a longtime member and elder of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed traveling, especially to the Glacier National Park, the Canadian Rockies and to Florida.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; four children and their spouses, Jane Whyte and her husband, Scott of Goldfield, Iowa, Tom Berglund of Sioux City, Jill Freed and her husband, Lance of Paullina, Iowa, and Dan Berglund and his wife, Lori of Storm Lake, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, Heather (Kurt) Johnson, Heidi (Cameron) Gregg, Preston Freed, Natalie (Carl) Anderson, Chris Freed, Lauren Berglund, Seth Berglund and Cobe Berglund; two great-grandchildren, Calvin and Chloe Gregg; two sisters, Florence Bierman of Marcus, Iowa, and Mary Ann Miller and her husband, Marvin "Wally" Miller Sr. of Cherokee; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert in 1970; two brothers, Glen and Kenneth Berglund; and a grandson, Brian Robert Whyte in 1988.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Cherokee County 4-H Youth Program and the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Restoration Fund.
