Gerald F. Tuttle

Gerald “Jerry” Tuttle, 65, of 6328 Simonsen Rd., Washta, Iowa, died Thursday January 3, 2008 at his home, following an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. on Monday January 7, 2008 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Don Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset View Cemetery Washta, Iowa. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home Cherokee, Iowa. Gerald was born on February 14, 1942 in Afton Township, Cherokee, Iowa, to Ernest and Augusta (Hasenwinkle) Tuttle. Jerry was confirmed at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia, Iowa on May 13, 1956. He attended school in Cherokee and graduated from Washington High School in 1960. After graduating he helped his father on the farm until entering the United States Army. On April 14, 1963 Jerry married Rebecca Johnson. He was stationed in Kentucky and Germany until his discharge from the Army in January of 1966.

Jerry then worked as a farm hand for Darrell Adamson for a short while until they moved to the farm where they currently reside. He farmed for many years and later worked for Cropmate. In 1995 he opened and operated Shade Tree Machine Shop in Washta. Jerry attended church at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Quimby where he served the church in many different capacities. He was a volunteer fire fighter with the Washta Fire Department for 22 years. He had served as the Treasurer and Assistant Chief with the Fire Department. He was also involved with AAL/ Thrivent Officer, Cattlemen’s Association, American Legion, Farm Bureau Board, Cherokee EMS Board and served as a Willow Township Trustee for 30 years. His greatest joy in life was his eleven grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Becky, son Gerald Mark Tuttle and his wife, Kim, of Cherokee, Iowa; four daughters, Erica Messerole and her husband, Tyler, of Maplewood, Minnesota, Rachel Eckenrod and her husband, Bruce, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Jennifer Schally and her husband, Troy, of St. Paul, Minnesota, Heidi Todd and her husband, Tom, of Quimby, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, Kelsey and Joe Messerole, Kiley and Kalen Eckenrod, Tracie and Jessica Tuttle, Henry and Eli Schally, Paige, Ben, and Jack Todd; brothers, Ernie Tuttle and his wife, Florence, of Aurelia, Iowa, Marvin Tuttle and his wife, Pat, of Des Moines, Iowa, John Tuttle and his wife, Liz, of Cherokee, Iowa, Ron Tuttle and his wife, Sandy, of Cherokee, Iowa; sisters, Mildred Troester and her husband, Lowell, of Brighton, Colorado, Arlene Van Hemert of Des Moines, Iowa, Deloris Rogers and her husband, Bill, of Des Moines, Iowa, Lola Dilocker of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; brothers-in-law, Carl Johnson and his wife, Jo, of LeMars, Iowa, Bill Johnson and his wife, Sue, of Hudsonville, Michigan; many, many nieces and nephews and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law Erick and Josephine Johnson; sisters, Verla Tuttle and Gladys Tuttle; brothers-in-law Dale Van Hemert and Eldon Dilocker; sisters-in-law, Beverly Tuttle and LaVonne Tuttle; a niece, Kathy Tuttle; a great niece, Melissa Stephenson.
