Eldon E. Hatterman

Eldon E. Hatterman, 86, of Cherokee passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at Careage Hills in Cherokee.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, with Pastor Richard Arndt officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Eldon was born on May 9, 1920, at Germantown, Iowa, to Henry and Clara (Kluendar) Hatterman. He attended schools in Everly, Harris and Cherokee.

He was married to Mary Jane Crapser on Sept. 4, 1937, at Elk Point, S.D. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1945 until 1946. He had worked for the railroad, drove truck and worked for the city of Cherokee in the water department for 29 years, retiring in August 1985.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years, driving the trucks for 32 of those years. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253 and the American Legion.

Eldon was a longtime resident of Cherokee and had also lived in Sioux City and Sheldon, Iowa, for a short time. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and playing cards.

Survivors include a daughter, Jaynie Kammerer and her husband, Jim of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, Gary Hatterman and his wife, Linda of Tucumcari, N.M.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Fannie Hatterman of Cherokee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, on Aug. 29, 2004; a brother, Wayne Hatterman; a sister and her husband, Ruby and Bill Rolles; and three grandchildren, Denny Lynn Kammerer, Brian Avery Hatterman and Kevin Hatterman.
