Nina Elizabeth Moding, the daughter of Lee and Amy Draper Gilbert, was born May 16, 1907 in rural Cherokee, Iowa. She attended schools in Buena Vista and O’Brien counties, graduating from the Sutherland High School. She later attended Taylor University in Upland, Indiana for one year.
She was librarian in Peterson for eleven years, serving from the start of the library. She also clerked in the Gilbert Grocery Store for several years. Nina enjoyed crocheting and made several caps for the newborn babies at Spencer Hospital through RSVP.
Nina was united in marriage to Carl Fred Moding on July 14, 1942 in Ponca, Nebraska. They farmed west of Peterson, where she remained one year after his death on December 13, 1981. At that time, she moved into Peterson. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Martha Circle.
Nina passed away at the Sutherland Care Center on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at the age of 99. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; three brothers: Paul, Ralph and Ellis Gilbert and a sister-in-law, Mabel Gilbert.
She is survived by two sister-in-laws, Dorothy of Phoenix, AZ and Amelia of Sutherland, IA; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
