Everet H. Nelson, 85, of Cherokee, died on Monday, Oct. 9, 2006 at 2:23 a.m. in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Pastor Jim Steen will officiate. Burial will be in the Quimby Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the Church on Friday. Visitation will be on Thurday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

Everet was born July 3, 1921 on a farm south of Aurelia to Hugo and Ellen (Nord) Nelson. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in 1936. He graduated from Aurelia High School in 1939 and was married to Cleo McCannon on Dec. 27, 1943 in Cherokee. The couple was engaged in farming near Cleghorn for one year. Due to Everet's health, they moved to Prescott, Ariz. in 1944. Everet entered the Oakdale TB Sanitarium in 1948 and returned to Quimby in 1952. He worked with Simonsens Propane and in the fall of 1957 began working as a custodian at the Quimby and later the Willow School, retiring after 27 years. He also drove school bus and activity bus. He was an avid sports fan, the Chicago Cubs being his favorite. He still had a pass to River Valley and Cherokee sporting events in his billfold. He especially enjoyed his grandson's sporting events. He was recognized as the Willow School Booster of the year on two separate occasions and as the first River Valley Booster of the Year in 2001.

He was a lifelong member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, serving on the Church Council. He especially enjoyed the Advent lutefisk suppers and the flower islands in the summer. Everet entered the Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center in July of 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Cleo on Aug. 20, 1999, three sisters: Astrid Mongan, Myrtle Taylor and Margaret Franken and three brothers Garland and Filmore Nelson and Phillip Nelson in infancy.

He is survived by one son and one daughter: Dennis Nelson and his wife Connie of Cherokee, JoAnne Tapper and her husband Kevin of Cherokee, four grandsons: Jeff Nelson and his wife Cinda of Reedsburg, Wis., John Nelson and his wife Tracy of Iowa City, Tim Tapper of Quimby, Steve Tapper of Orange City, six great-grandchildren: Kim, Corey, Brit, Ben, Mack and Ella; two brothers: Donald Nelson and his wife Jackie of Littleton, Colo. Bob Nelson and his wife Mary of Cherokee, sisters-in-law: Marcella Nelson and Nellie Nelson of Cherokee and Gaylord Franken of Daytona Beach, Fla. many relatives, friends and all those students whose lives he touched.
