Jerry McDermott, 43, of 5124 J Ave. Cleghorn, died Thursday at his home following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Services are Monday October 9, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Father Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial is in the Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home. There was a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com .

Jerry was born Dec. 19, 1962 to Lawrence and Arlene (Goebel) McDermott in Le Mars. He grew up in Kingsley and graduated from Kingsley-Pierson High School in 1981. After high school Jerry attended Iowa State University and in 1985 transferred to Briar Cliff University to finish his physical education degree. On June 27, 1987 he married Beth Weisbrod in Emmetsburg. He then went back to Northwestern College in Orange City to obtain his teaching certificate. Jerry started as a teacher's aide and coach and then went full time as a special education teacher in Cherokee. He most recently has been the P.E. teacher at the Cherokee Middle School.

Jerry enjoyed many activities such as hunting, fishing, golf, and cheering on many sports teams including the Iowa State Cyclones and Kansas City Chiefs. He was a member of the Cherokee County Conservation Board and Pheasants Forever.

He is survived by his wife, Beth and their three daughters, Rachel, Alissa, and Sarah, of Cleghorn; his parents Lawrence and Arlene McDermott of Kingsley; two brothers Mike McDermott of Granville and Marvin McDermott of Kingsley; six sisters; Marci Kreber and her husband, Don, of Paullina; Laura Cornelius and her husband, Keith, of Council Bluffs; Janet Mouser and her husband, Gene, of Columbus, Ohio; Kathy Staab and her husband, John, of Le Mars; Mary Gloden and her husband, Jerry, of Le Mars; and Judy Wagoner and her husband, Cary, of Holstein; several nieces and nephews.
