James W.(Jimmie) Scott passed away June 25, 1984 in Eugene, Or. after a long illness.
Jimmie was born Jan. 19, 1916 in Spring Township, Cherokee County Ia. to Clarence and Gladys (Dunn) Scott. His mother died when he was a small child and he was raised by his grandparents, James J. and Lucinda (Morrison) Scott. He graduated from Aurelia, Ia. high school in 1933.
After high school he went to Alaska and helped build the Alcan Highway.
When World WarII broke out he enlisted in the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program. He received his pilot's wings and was commisioned a Second Lieutenant on Jan. 4th 1943. He was later assigned to the Air Transport Command in the China-Burma-India theater of operations. He flew 50 + missions over the Hump ( Himalayan Mts. )flying supplies to the Chinese after the Japanese seized the Burma Road. Nearly 1/2 of the planes and crews were lost . They are still locating crash sites and crew remains today.He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross( which is on display at the Aurelia Ia. Heritage Center) and the Air Medal. At the time of his discharge from the Air Corps he had attained the rank of Captain.
After the war ended he returned to the place he loved, Alaska, and bought a sea plane and engaged in bush pilot flying, gold mining, and commercial fishing
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He was survived by a sister, Geraldine Parrott and her husband Dean, of Ft. Myers Fla,. an aunt, Mrs Agnes Blake of Aurelia; and numerous cousins.
He was buried June 27, 1984 at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Or.
