MARCUS, Iowa -- Ed Schnoes, 81, of Marcus passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, with the Revs. Eugene Murray and Dan Rupp and Deacon LeRoy Rupp officiating. Burial will be in Holy Name Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion F.I. Goodburn Post 517 of Marcus.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 3 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus.

Edward Jacob Schnoes was born June 30, 1923, in Granville, Iowa, the son of Edward and Kathryn (Schlichte) Schnoes. He was educated in Granville and Marcus, graduating from high school in 1942. He served overseas in the European Theater with Company A of the 330th Infantry Regiment. He attained the rank of Tec. 5 and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal prior to his honorable discharge on May 11, 1946.

He returned to the area and married Dorothy Rupp on June 19, 1947, at Maryhill Catholic Church near Cherokee, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm near Marcus, where they started their family. They would farm until retiring in 1985. Upon retirement, they moved into Marcus.

He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, where he was a faithful mass server, a lay distributor and a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the Farmer's Elevator board for nine years and was a member of the American Legion F.I. Goodburn Post 517. He enjoyed visiting, playing cards and golfing.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy of Marcus; a son and his wife, Ron and Kris of Remsen, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Sandy and Kyle Tapper of Marcus; a son and his wife, Jeff and Mylene of Spanish Post, Ala.; 12 grandchildren, Jessica, Ryan, Jill and Eric Schnoes, Becky, Cory and Jackie Tapper and Nick, Karl, Mike, Asia and Christian Schnoes; a sister, Anna Horn of Marcus; and two brothers and their wives, Leo and Jane of Sioux City and Jim and Mary of Coralville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sisters, Florence and Viola; three sisters, Rose Schnoes, Margie Schnoes and Minnie McClintock; and a brother, Raymond.
