CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Donald A. Hughes, 84, of Cherokee passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at his residence.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee, with the Rev. Craig zumBrunnen officiating. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. There will be a flag presentation conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253.
Donald was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Cherokee, to Albert and Ethel (Fricke) Hughes. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1938. On Sept. 5, 1939, he married his high school sweetheart, Jayne Marguerite Greer. He graduated from Drake in 1942, with a degree in commercial science and a major in accounting. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He returned to Cherokee in July 1947, where he joined his father as an abstractor, real estate broker and insurance agent in the Moore Abstract and Title Co. and as assistant treasurer of the Sioux Valley Savings and Loan Association, which his father founded and was operated in conjunction with the abstract company. In 1958, he sold the abstract company to George Hoyt and spent the rest of his career at Sioux Valley Savings and Loan, where he eventually became president and chairman of the board. He retired in 1986, having devoted 40 years to the business. The business had grown immensely and had established branches in Aurelia, Holstein, Le Mars, Mapleton, Paullina, Primghar and Remsen, Iowa.
During his years in business, he was involved in a number of civic and business organizations. He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with many trips to Wyoming, Canada and down the Little Sioux River.
He is survived by a son and his wife, Donald A. and Cindy Hughes II of Sioux City; a daughter, Peggy Louise Robbins of Des Moines; three grandsons; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; a sister and her husband, Carol and George Elledge of Huntsville, Ala.; a former sister-in-law, Peggy Greer Edgington of Sioux City; and a special friend, Robyn C. Robinson of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jayne on Sept. 10, 1967; his father in 1964; and his mother in 1994.
