CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Naomi R. Alloway, 97, of Cherokee died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Countryside Estates in Cherokee following a brief illness.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Ray Hampton officiating. Burial will be in Canby Church Cemetery, Canby, Iowa. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.
Naomi was born Feb. 17, 1907, in Adair County, Iowa, to Bernard and Alice (Aronson) Raper. She grew up on their family farm near Canby. After graduating from Greenfield High School in 1924, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught at a rural school for the seventh and eighth grades at Zion Consolidated in Orient, Iowa.
She married Marion Alloway in Aug. 4, 1928, in Canby. They moved to Creston, Iowa, where she substitute taught for five years. The couple then moved to Cherokee in 1933 and purchased Pantorium Cleaners. They had resided in Cherokee for many years. Marion passed away Sept. 2, 1970.
She was a member of the Federated Women's Club (Art Club) for 50 years and St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bridge and her club until she was 95 years of age. She had traveled to Jamaica, Scandinavian countries, throughout the United States and many times to Canada. She loved her family and was devoted to them.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and Howard Steinberg of Newbury Park, Calif., and Ann and Gary Holck of Spencer, Iowa; grandchildren and their spouses, Sabra Steinberg and Jeff Dunk, Shawn and Jill Steinberg, J. Tyler and Gayle Holck, Kristin and R.J. Cardin and Alyson and Greg Rajnowski; great-grandchildren, Haleigh Dunk, Emily and Blair Steinberg, Blair, Johanna and Garrison Holck, Jaymie Cardin and Levi and Brook Rajnowski; and sisters-in-law, Marjorie Ford and Athel Cavanaugh.
She was preceded in death by husband, Marion Alloway; a son, Ronald in 1935; her parents; and brothers, Norwyn and Noel Raper.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
