CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Margaret E. Grayson, 81, of Cherokee passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a several month illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Roger Maize officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery, Larrabee, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Margaret was born Sept. 30, 1924, on a farm near Lake City, Iowa, to James and Lola (Hermanson) Bravard. She grew up on a farm near Holstein, Iowa, attending rural schools in Ida County, Iowa, through the eighth grade. She graduated from Cushing (Iowa) High School in 1942. She attended one year of Normal Training at Buena Vista in Storm Lake, Iowa. She taught rural school in Ida County for five years. She then worked at a defense plant in Grand Island, Neb. during World War II.
She was married to Merle Grayson on June 18, 1949, in Scranton, Iowa. She had also worked in several restaurants, the hot lunch program at Washta (Iowa) School and drove cars for Holzhauer Motors. She had lived in Cherokee since 1982, prior to this on a farm west of Larrabee, Iowa for 33 years.
She was a member of Larrabee United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, reading and traveling.
She is survived by five children, Steven Grayson and his wife, Julie of Paullina, Iowa, Rhonda Saxen of Cherokee, Keith "Pete" Grayson of Cherokee, Mabeth and her husband, Denny Kraft of Larrabee, Iowa, and Craig Grayson of Mason City, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Kara and Mike Thompson, Stephanie VanHeuvelen, Tammy Mough and Bill Hall, Melissa Kraft and Karl Kellen, Tracy and Denise Kraft, Tori Roberson and Samantha Grayson; 12 great-grandchildren, Cade Thompson, Justin Grause, Cody Rassel, Brycen Mough, Emily Kraft, Krista Thompson, Derik Smith, Paige Kraft, Wyatt Kraft, Halie Kraft, Justus Kraft and Ethan Roberson; a half brother, Tom Bravard of Las Cruces, N.M.; and a sister-in-law, Sheron Bravard of Poplar, Mont.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Bravard; her mother and stepfather, Lola and Gus Mohr; her husband, Merle Grayson on March 26, 1998; a son-in-law, James "Packy" Saxen; a half brother, James Bravard; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Grayson.
