CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Richard L. "Dick" Ades, 74, of Cherokee died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Gregg Johnson officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Dick was born July 24, 1930, in Webster City, Iowa, to Roy and Florence (Stevens) Ades. He was raised on the banks of the Boone River, graduating from Webster City High School in 1947. He served in the North Atlantic as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1947 to 1952 during the Korean War. Following his military service, he returned to Iowa and worked for Strands Bakery in Marshalltown, Iowa.

He then went to patrol school at Camp Dodge in Des Moines. His first post as a member of the Iowa State Patrol was in Maquoketa, Iowa, where he served until being promoted to sergeant in 1967 and moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1972, he was promoted to lieutenant and moved to Cherokee. In 1979, he was promoted to captain and he served as commander of Area B for the Iowa State Highway Patrol, until his retirement in 1988.

On Oct. 26, 1951, he married Linda Keigan in Litchfield, Minn.

He coached Little League in Cedar Rapids and Cherokee. He was a "crack shot" and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. He served in the Governor's Security detail for many state and national honorees. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and also enjoyed playing cards. He enjoyed traveling and watching his children and grandchildren participating in different events.

He was a member of the Crossroads Christian Church, Pheasants Forever and the Cherokee County Club. He also was a member of the American Legion in Maquoketa. He and all his brothers were involved in some type of law enforcement.

Survivors include his wife, Linda; a daughter and her husband, Laurie and Bill Bark of Marion, Iowa; his sons, Brad and John Ades, both of Cherokee and David Ades of Lyman, S.C.; grandchildren, Gabe Bark, Travis Bark, Sara Bark and Molly Ades; and his brothers and their wives, Robert and Glenny Ades of Webster City, Iowa, Art and Carol Ades of Mason City, Iowa, and Carl and Wilma Ades of Clear Lake, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Marion; and a sister, Velma.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for various charities.
