CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Bob Rahn, 81, of Cherokee died Friday, July 1, 2005, at Careage Hills in Cherokee.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Following the service, his body will be cremated. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee at a later date. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary with the Knights of Columbus at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Bob Rahn was born June 17, 1924, in Cherokee to Edward and Olive Rahn. Bob and his family moved to Sioux City when he was 6 months old. He attended grade school in Sioux City through the sixth grade. He then returned to Cherokee at the start of his seventh grade year and graduated from Wilson High School in 1943.

On June 5, 1943, Bob joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Navigation Department of the 3rd Marine Air Wing, 4th Division, in the Consolidation of Solomon Islands Marianas operation during World War II. He was honorably discharged in January 1946 as a sergeant with the Good Conduct Medal. He worked as a lifeguard at Spring Lake Park in the summers of 1946 and 1947. He attended the National Business Training College in Sioux City from 1946 through 1948 and earned an associate degree in accounting.

He returned to Cherokee and married Helen Johnson on Dec. 26, 1948. He worked for Coast to Coast Hardware until he was transferred to the Holstein, Iowa, store in 1955, where he worked until 1957. In 1958, Bob moved back to Cherokee, where he worked as a loan officer for Credit Bureau of Northwest Iowa for the Cherokee, Storm Lake and Le Mars offices. From 1963 to 1966, he worked as a loan officer for Public Loan in Cherokee. In 1967, he started his own collection agency named PDA Collectors and continued this until 1976. He also served as justice of the peace for Cherokee from 1971 to 1974. From 1976 to 1980, Bob worked as a loan officer for Southwest Investment Corporation in Le Mars. From 1980 to 1991, Bob worked in the Cherokee County Auditor's office until his retirement.

Bob was a loving husband and devoted father and very much enjoyed visiting with his children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. An active and faithful member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bob participated in and was the treasurer for the Knights of Columbus for many years. He also enjoyed attending the congregate meals during his retirement years and served as treasurer of the Cherokee Senior Citizens organization for many years.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Robert Rahn and his wife, Roberta of Altoona, Iowa, and Donald Rahn and his wife, Stephanie of Cherokee; granddaughters, Shelby and Carly Rahn of Cherokee; a sister-in-law, Lila Rahn of Grand Island, Neb.; and several other relatives and friends.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents, Edward and Olive Rahn; his wife, Helen in 1993; a son, Randy in 1973; two brothers, John and Karl Rahn; and a sister, Elaine Gulling.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Cherokee Public Library Children's Department.
