--MARCUS, Iowa -- Madge Vivian (Barnes) Drefke, 95, of Marcus died Saturday, July 15, 2006, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus, with the Rev. James Gruber officiating. Burial will be at Marcus-Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus.
Madge Vivian Barnes was born March 25, 1911, in Amherst Township, Cherokee County, Iowa. She was the eldest child of Lloyd and Neva (Wilson) Barnes. She attended Marcus Public Schools and graduated in 1929. She attended Iowa State College and Iowa Teachers College and then taught in rural schools near Marcus for eight years.
She was married to Delmer Carl (Slim) Drefke on Aug. 1, 1934, and they farmed in Amherst Township until 1963, when they moved to Marcus.
As a long-time member of Peace Lutheran Church, she shared her talents and time. She was a member of Ladies Aid, Lutheran Braille Workers, Tourist Club, Neighborhood Birthday Club and enjoyed playing cards with friends. She was a devoted farm wife and very talented in sewing and knitting.
Survivors are her sons, Max Drefke and wife, Nancy and Ray Drefke, DVM and wife, Ann, all of Marcus; grandchildren, Donna Drefke and son, Brian of Polk City, Iowa; Brent and Michelle Drefke and son, Jared of Farmington, Minn.; LuAnn and husband, Brian Miller of Marcus; Kyle and Kristi Drefke and daughters, Greta, Madeleine and Sigrid of Bethesda, Md.; Kenny Drefke and wife, Lisa of Naples, Italy and Scott and Amy Drefke and daughter, Payton of Ankeny, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Harriet Barnes Rickert of Arizona and Rena Drefke of Spencer, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Slim in January 1998; her parents, Lloyd and Neva Barnes, a sister, Vera Roberson; a brother, Lee Barnes; and infant brother, Lyle.
