CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Clarence J. "C.J." Barwick, 87, of Cherokee passed away Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, with Pastor Bob Blair officiating. Burial of the cremated ashes will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.
Clarence was born March 31, 1918, at Raymond, S.D., to Clarence and Maggie (Hoffman) Barwick. He attended country school in Lincoln Township, S.D. He moved with his family to the Pierson area in 1932. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1936 and attended Morningside College in Sioux City. He served in the U. S. Army from May 20, 1941, until he was discharged Dec. 19, 1945. He received the Combat Infantry award, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, European Theater Medal with four Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal.
He was married to Ella Belle Ralston on April 26, 1941, at her parents' home in Grand Meadow Township. He had farmed from 1946 until retiring in September 1990.
He was a longtime member and elder of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and currently a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee. He had served on the Grand Meadow School Board, had been a Grand Meadow Township trustee, ASCS Township committeeman, director of the Cherokee Farm and Home Administration, director of the Cherokee County Corn Growers Association and the Cherokee County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed playing basketball, softball, boating, water skiing, dancing and, most of all, time spent with his family.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Belle Sears and her husband, Jerry of Sheldon, Iowa; two sons, Steve Barwick and his wife, Marti of Bloomington, Ill., and Sidney Barwick and his wife, Sherry of Collierville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Belle Lapke, Wade Sears, Scott Barwick, James Barwick, Kelly Gonzalez, Jayson Barwick and Kristina Barwick; five great-grandchildren, Josie Belle Lapke, Jack Raymond Lapke, Parker Barwick Sears, Ariel Grace Gonzalez and Elizabeth Ocean Barwick; two sisters-in-law, Colleen Barwick of Akron, Iowa, and Emma Trapp of Washta, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ella Belle on March 3, 2002; and a brother, Verle Barwick.
