Richard “Dick” Arndt, 69, of Cherokee, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2006 at his home following a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Father Armand Bertrand and his nephew, Father Tom Hart will officiate. Military Graveside Rites will be held by the VFW at the Oakland Cemetery, Sac City, Iowa on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., with a scripture service at 7:00 P.M., at Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee. Online condolences may be sent to www.greenwoodfuneral.com .

Dick was born November 22, 1936, in Jolley, Iowa to Hans and Mary (Blanchard) Arndt. Richard attended Sac City Community School. He graduated in 1956. He was a Veteran of the US Navy serving in the Asian Action from 1956 to 1960 as an Aviation Machinist. Dick met and married Jeanette Helen in 1964. He worked as a draftsman and surveyor for Otto Engineering of Sac City and for the Railway Express Agency in Storm Lake. Dick then worked for the Chesterman Company as a route salesman in Aurelia, Iowa.

Richard spent 13 years as a volunteer fireman for the Storm Lake Fire Department. He enjoyed the camaraderie of being an officer at the VFW Post 2253 of Cherokee, Iowa. Dick enjoyed working in his garden, laughing and joking with others, but mostly spending time with his family, grandchildren and close friends.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette, of Cherokee, Iowa; two daughters and one son; Sharon Arndt-Nelson and her husband, Jeff, of Cherokee, Iowa; Sandra Meylor and her husband, Robert, of Sioux Falls SD; John Arndt and his wife, Marsha, of Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren; Zachary Nelson, and step-grandchild Joshua Nelson, Joy and Christian Arndt and Mitchell and Edward Meylor. Dick was also survived by two brothers; Fred Arndt and his wife, Edith, of Hot Springs Ark., Victor Arndt and his wife, Margaret, of Oro Valley, Arizona and sister Mary Ellen Pickinpaugh and her husband, Roger, of Carter Lake, Iowa. As well as many nieces and nephews.

Dick is proceeded in death by his parents, one brother, Terry. Memorials may be left to Hospice of Cherokee Regional Hospital.
