Charles E. Westphal, 74, of Larrabee, Iowa died Sunday May 14, 2006, in his own home, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, Larrabee, Iowa. Pastor Dennis Hopes will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedar Township Cemetery, rural Larrabee, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Charles was born December 31, 1931 on a farm near Paullina, Iowa to Edward and Elsie (Holck) Westphal. He attended rural school and graduated from Calumet High School in 1950. Following his graduation he farmed with his father, near Calumet, Iowa, for several years. On January 18, 1952 he married Dorothy Weins in Paullina, Iowa. They farmed near Larrabee, Iowa, later moving to the town of Larrabee, in 1967. Charles worked for Wilson Foods Inc. for many years in the beef cooler and smokehouse departments, retiring in 1992.
Charles served as Larrabee city councilman, then as mayor for 16 years, then again as city councilman. He was currently superintendent of the waste water lagoon in Laarrabee, Iowa and he did mowing for the city. He was very fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their activities. Charles was an active member of his church in Larrabee.
Survivors include his wife; son, Rick Westphal, and his wife, Pam, of Larrabee, Iowa; daughter, Teresa Newbury, and her husband, Randy, of Burnswick, Georgia; his mother and step-father, Elsie Hardin, and her husband, Loran, of Larrabee, Iowa; sister, Ardelle Richter, and her husband, Leonard, of Germantown, Iowa; brothers, Larry Westphal, and his wife, Suzie, of Banning, California; Lonnie Westphal, and his wife, Annette, of Larkspur, Colorado; grandchildren, Nick Westphal, and his friend, Heather; Nate Westphal, and his wife, Kate; Nicole Westphal, and her friend, Marty;Zachary Cargin and Cassie Cargin; great-grandchildren, Ty and Morgan Westphal.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother (Robert Westphal).
