Obituary

Adeline Ursula Thomas Smith was born January 3rd, 1828, at Stowe, Vermont. At the age of twenty she moved to Ohio, and was married in 1840 to Gideon Franklin. Soon after the marriage she moved to Woodford county, Ill. In 1861 she moved to Alamakee county, Iowa. In 1863 her husband enlisted in the army and he died in a hospital September 28, 1864. Six children were born of this union of whom four survive her: Mrs. L.W. Granger of Montrose S.D.; Mrs. S.F. Goodrich of Cherokee, Iowa,; O.D. Franklin of North Platt, Neb., and O.M. Franklin of Alamakee county, Iowa. In 1867 she was married to Reuben Smith, who died August 11, 1880. In youth she united with the Christian church. About 1870 she became a member of the Free Methodist church at Mt. Pleasant S.D. She had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Goodrich, for the last year and a half. She departed this life about 9 o’clock Friday evening, Jan 18, 1895. The funeral services were held at the home of S.F. Goodrich last Saturday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. W.L. Ferris, assisted by Rev. J Cole, a large concourse of people being present. The deceased was a woman of strong faith and practical Christian piety. Her Christian experience was remarkably clear and bright and her influence for good was known and felt throughout the entire neighborhood where she lived. Her example and kindly words were exceedingly helpful to old and young alike. The remains were taken Sabbath morning to Montrose, S.D., her son G.M Franklin and Mr. and Mrs. Goodrich accompanying them.
