ROCK FALLS — Harold B. Edgar, 62, of Rock Falls died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, at Old Stone United Methodist Church, 1 W. Jackson St., Rock Falls, with Pastor Clyde Harvey of the Neighborhood Church, Bishop, Calif., officiating. Interment will be held in Rock Falls Cemetery.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Make a Wish Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or Hospice of North Iowa. The family requests casual wear for both visitation and funeral attire.

Harold was born May 24, 1948, in Mason City, the son of David and Doris (Steil) Edgar. He attended elementary school at Rock Falls Community School until 5th grade and then graduated from Nora Springs-Rock Falls High School in 1966.

On June 1, 1968, he married his wife, Phyllis (Barloon), and together they raised two daughters, Lori and Danielle.

Harold was known to most as "Mr. Jack of All Trades." He was an avid business man and entrepreneur. Among the many things Harold has done in his lifetime, a few include water tower repair and painting, fur trading and selling with his close friend Lloyd Wreghitt, and managing chicken houses for Hi-Cross Hatchery. He was a maintenance worker at Decker Meat Packing plant for seven years, then took a turn for education and graduated from NIACC with a degree in business management in 1976.

He was the founder of the Rock Falls Boy Scout Troop No. 374, and was Scoutmaster for some time thereafter. Harold enjoyed anything that involved the outdoors, from hunting and trapping, fishing trips to Canada, to raising mink and fox.

Harold loved woodworking and eventually made a career out of his hobby. For almost 10 years Harold and Phyllis traveled the country selling their crafts with the Country Folk Art Craft Show company under the business name of Dodie Dumpling Crafts.

After a house fire in 1998 that put an end to the road travel, he became manager of operations at Hy-Vee East in Mason City.

Harold had always had dreams of owning and operating a breakfast cafe, and in November of 2001 that dream finally became a reality. Harold's pride and biggest accomplishment, named and themed after his love for his daughters (L & D), and his love of classic cars and hot rods, LD's Filling Station Bar & Grill was born.

Together with his wife, Phyllis, Harold (now known as Mr. LD and Mrs. LD), managed to mold a small little breakfast spot into a locally loved restaurant.

Harold saw life as a challenge worth conquering and met every day with a positive outlook.

Harold is survived by his wife of 42 years, Phyllis, of Rock Falls; children, Lori (Jerry) Schade of Mason City, Danielle Edgar and significant other Matt Pace of Rock Falls; grandchildren, Brandyn Schade of Clear Lake, Lindsey Schade and friend Jacob Guerrero of San Angelo, Texas, and Shelbey Schade of Mason City; sisters, Bonnie (Bruce) Jennings of Longmont, Colo., Jackie (David) Person of Edina, Minn.; and brother Michael (Robin) Edgar of Mason City.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, close friends and relatives, and his loyal family of staff and customers at LD's Filling Station.

He was preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents, William (Ethel) Edgar; maternal grandparents, Vern (Hazel) Steil.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.majorericksonfuneralhome.com.

Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, Iowa; 641-423-0924; www.majorericksonfuneralhome.com.
