Obituary - Marjorie A. (O'Connor) Plunkett
1901 ~ September 29, 1997

MASON CITY — Marjorie A. Plunkett, 96, formerly of Mason City, passed away on Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at home with her family in Riverside, Ill.

The funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside. Presiding was a close family friend, Father Daniel Hartnett, S.J., who will be returning with the family to preside at a memorial service to be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at the Sacred Heart Church, Rockwell, Iowa, with burial to follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Rockwell.

Marjorie was born in 1901, in Rockwell, Iowa, to Dennis and Catherine (Kelsh) O'Connor. She was the youngest of eight and was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters, and husband, Leo Plunkett. When her husband was burned to death at his place of employment in 1943, her daughter, Denise, was 2 years old and son, John, was 9 months old.

After suffering a stroke in March of 1997, she was confined to bed in her home. Her daughter, Denise, was her primary care-giver, with help from other members of the family. She had a very peaceful death, surrounded by all of her family.

Marjorie was a former member of Holy Family Parish and was active in the St. Ritas Circle. She graduated from Drake University and taught in Mason City for 32 years. She retired in 1966 and continued to live in Mason City until the fall of 1983, when she moved to Illinois to join her family.

"Mom was the last of a large family which included 86 first cousins," said her daughter, Denise, also of Riverside. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by her son, John and his wife, Mary; two grandsons, Christopher and Benjamin, and his wife, Catherine; and a great-grandson, Tyler, all living in or near Riverside.
