Obituary - Mildred Jane "Millie" (Paskin) Platts
February 14, 1926 ~ March 10, 2007

MASON CITY — Mildred J. Platts, 81, of 644 S. Louisiana Ave. in Mason City, died Saturday afternoon (March 10, 2007) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams in Mason City, with the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City. Visitation will be held from 4:30 until 8 p.m. today, March 12, 2007, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with a Scripture vigil service beginning at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to Millie’s service on Tuesday at the church. Those wishing to extend memorials may wish to direct them to the Mildred J. Platts Memorial Fund.

Mildred Jane Platts, lovingly known as “Millie” to many of her relatives and friends, was born on Feb, 14, 1926, in Morgan, Minn., the sixth of seven children born to her parents, Robert Bruce and Katherine Ann (Larsen) Paskin. At the tender age of two, Millie’s mother died and she continued to be lovingly cared for by her father and Aunt Jane and Uncle Will. Millie attended rural country school and graduated from Renwick High School. Upon graduation, she moved to Mason City and was employed at Mercy Hospital in the records department. Later, she worked at Good Shepherd Health Center as a nursing assistant for 17 years.

Millie met her future husband, William James Platts, at a dance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. They were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on Feb. 22, 1948. Millie and William became the proud and busy parents of three daughters and two sons.

Some of Millie’s favorite hobbies and leisure activities included writing poetry and letters, tending to small pets, collecting porcelain dolls and horse and pig figurines, sharing coffee and conversation with her neighbor gals, and attending reunions. Throughout her life, she was fond of all animals, especially horses.

Millie was a talented artist, creating numerous drawings and paintings. She was fascinated by anything “Shirley Temple” and it always seemed that “something exciting was happening” at her home!

Millie’s greatest joy and devotion was to her family and her home. Her children recall that their mother was a very compassionate and caring woman who delighted them with delicious home-cooked meals and baked goods, especially her fresh cinnamon rolls and pies, the best-ever apple pies! Millie resided most of her life in Mason City, where she was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and a former member of the Home Builder’s Auxiliary.

Millie will be deeply missed by her children, Rebecca and David Arvizu of Des Moines, Kathleen and Monte Kallas of Mason City, Bob and Sue Platts of Mason City, Michele and Jon Oswood of Cedar Rapids and her daughter-in-law, Karen Platts of Mason City; her brother, Frank Paskin of Gridley, Kan.; and her 12 grandchildren, Jamie and Julianne Arvizu, Joel and Jennifer Arvizu, Jonathan Arvizu, G.W. Justin and Jessica Platts, Abby and Chad Weydert, Tom Platts, Erin and Adam Rohwer, Ryan Platts, Reid Platts, Tyler Oswood, Kaitlin Oswood and Carter Oswood. She will also be dearly cherished by her five great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Millie in death are her husband, William J. Platts, in July of 1994; her son, William Craig “Bill” Platts, in October of 2004; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, George and Gertrude Platts; her two sisters, Katherine Esmay and Eileen Cameron; and her three brothers, Tom, Bob and Ben Paskin.
