KIMBALL KILLED IN ACTION
on IWO JIMA, FEBRUARY 19

Was Serving With 28th Marines of the 5th Division

Marine Pvt. Gene KIMBALL, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn L. KIMBALL, 503 14th S.E., was killed in action on Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, according to a telegram received here Wednesday.

Marine Pvt. KIMBALL was serving with the 5th marine division on Iwo Jima. He had been overseas since last September. He had been wounded in maneuvers during his first training overseas.

Gene was born in Mason City on Jan. 18, 1926. He attended Roosevelt public school and the local high school. Before entering the service on March 9, 1944, he ws employed at Boyer's Grocery store and at the Buehler service station.

While taking basic training at San Diego, Cal., he won 2 medals for accurate sharpshooting. After finishing his basic he was transferred to Camp Pendelton at Oceanside, Cal., and there assigned to the 28th marines of the 5th division. He had his only furlough home in June last year.

Besides his parents he is survived by a brother, Vernon J. KIMBALL, S 1/c, Bremerton, Wash.; a brother, Glenn, Jr., and a sister, Gladys, at home; also his parental grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

He was baptized in the Trinity Lutheran church in Mason City.
