Obituary - Daniel S. Kelley

MASON CITY - Daniel S. KELLEY, 94, of Mason City, formerly of Springfield, Mo., died Sunday, March 13, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Ed BARD, Chaplain, Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, Mo.

Memorials may be directed to the Daniel KELLEY Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Daniel was born on April 11, 1916, in Ash Grove, Mo., the son of Fred and Ethel (SHINKLE) KELLEY. In 1934, he graduated from Central High School in Springfield, Mo. Daniel married Ora Faye STRADLEY on April 11, 1946, in Hood River, Ore. Daniel proudly served in the United States Navy for over 20 years, specializing in Naval Communications. Daniel was aboard the USS Curtiss during the Pearl Harbor attack. He was also involved in Guadalcanal, the formal surrender of Japan at the end of World War II, and special assignments in China. Daniel was offered Junior Commissioned Officer, but respectfully chose to remain a Senior Serviceman. Daniel had a great love for the Navy and his country. Daniel was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and a former Secretary for the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

He was also a member of Greene County Genealogical Society and the Central Christian Church in Springfield, Mo. (Builders Sunday School Class), where he never missed Men's Coffee Club. Daniel enjoyed woodworking, photography, fishing, genealogy, and crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing his gardening skills. Daniel loved riding his Snapper lawn mower (whether the grass was needing to be cut or not).

Daniel is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Ora Faye KELLEY of Mason City; daughter: Alice IVERSON and husband Greg of Clear Lake; son: Bob Kelley of Albany, Ga.; three grandchildren: Amy JAYNES and husband Tim of Hudson, Wis., Jacob IVERSON and wife Christina of Fairfax, Va., and Nicholas IVERSON of St. Paul, Minn.; one great-granddaughter: Kylee JAYNES of Hudson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings: Kathleen SMALLWOOD, Don KELLEY, and Wilma KELLEY.
